Recently we discovered that the Smartass Darters Society section at MyDartShirts.com was not only getting large, but before too long would literally need it's own web site altogether. So, we decided to create a sister site to remedy the situation.

Introducing SmartassDarts.com, the new home of the Smartass Darters Society.

The Smartass Darters Society is a club for the serious shooter with attitude and arrogance, the lighter sided dart player that enjoys darts humor and the pub crawler who enjoys the game with spirit. Interesting Dart Game: Crooks!

Recently a friend created a new game during our regular Tungsten Thursday get together. It is definitely fun and challenging, yet we've been realizing it is also a great warm up game to play before getting into a few legs for an evening.

The game is a combination of Loops and Cricket. We had originally named it Croops but that soon became Crooks after the aiming fluid had its normal effects on our speech.

For readers who have never played Loops, here are the basics:

Loops is very similar to the basketball game Horse It can be played by any number of players. Its actually more fun with a lot of people, especially if everyone kicks in a dollar and the winner takes all.

Why do they call this Loops? A loop in the game is considered anything enclosed by a wire. So naturally every target on the board is considered a loop. Each wedge is actually four loops, the skinny, fat, double and triple. BUT, consider this; the CLOSED loops of the numbers around the outside of the board count as valid targets! For example the loop that makes up the lower half of the number 6 is a target, however the upper hook of the 6 is not. The 8 and 18 each have two valid loops. Clearly these make for challenging targets! The bullseye is limited of course to a single or double for the target loop.

Everyone Diddles - a throw of one dart each at bullseye - to determine the throwing order for the game. Players names are written in throwing order down the left side of the scoreboard with the closet player to the bull throwing first and the furthest throwing last.

The first player has up to 3 darts to determine the loop they'd like to leave the next player as a challenge to hit. Should they hit a loop they're happy with in less than 3 darts they have the option to leave that loop and hold their remaining dart(s). In other words, the player may not make a choice of the darts thrown, only the last dart counts. The next player now must try to land a dart in the exact same wedge or loop of the board. If that player misses with all three darts, one strike mark is chalked next to their name and the following player has an "open" board to select their target from. If the player is successful in matching the wedge or loop, the player pulls the darts and has all three to establish a new target.

Once a player has three strikes marked they are eliminated from the game. The last player left declares victory.

Now enter Cricket into the mix. The game is played in the same manner with these differences:

Only Cricket wedges and loops are valid
Rather than scoring 3 strikes or marks against your opponent, regular cricket marks are used
The object is to close your opponent out before you are closed out
Valid loops outside of the scoring area (ie: the zero in the number 20) count as triples

This makes for a fun and challenging game, as your regular Cricket strategy will change slightly. Other advantages are the loops outside of the scoring area which can get you ahead or get you caught up in a hurry. Unless playing with points take note that once you have your opponent closed on a number, it is a waste of time to leave them that number again.

A recent custom design request came in for the 2011 Utah Darts Open. The request was for some sort of mash up of our Darts Skull design and the West Roxbury Pub Dart League design we created, as their tournament is also a celebration of St. Patrick's Day. Amused with the recent dialogue being blasted through the news and the Internet from Charlie Sheen, I began a series of Tweets modifying some of the entertaining quotes to include some darts lingo. And what likely comes as a surprise to absolutely no one, I wound up putting them on dart shirts.

For the sake of a few laughs at league and local tournaments, these new dart shirts are now on the way to my front porch. Grab you're favorite quote or quotes for shenanigans at the boards and a little memorabilia from another celebrity train wreck.

Darts: An Army Of Three

This design started off as a concept for a dart team going by the name An Army Of Three. My darts partner in crime came up with the name during a tournament a while back, as a few of the players were chatting in between rounds.

After tinkering with the design along with some lettering for a while, we decided this one really doesn't need to reflect a team name. It just looks pretty darned cool. And rest assured, a team logo design for An Army Of Three will pop out of the creative department sooner or later.

I was recently directed to a web site called Konkuri by someone commenting on my Dart Tournament Brackets Squidoo Lens and I have to say it looks interesting!

From their website:

With Konkuri you can create the tournament site, generate round-robin and brackets, schedule date and time of every match, edit results and standings, write the tournament's blog, have users and visitors comments on posts and matches.

I gave it a test run using an existing group of players from the last weekly luck of the draw tournament I ran and other than requiring a certain format (minimum three legs per match for example) it appears to work great. I'm considering losing the notebook and paperwork and taking my laptop to the weekly blind draws from now on.

The folks at Toys for Tots said a higher number of people are asking for help this holiday season.

A group in Schuylkill County is making sure that need is met.

Volunteers gathered in John Kuczynski's garage near Zion Grove and began the job of packing up toys. Kuczynski raised money by sponsoring dart tournaments. He said his group of friends then went out and bought $15,000 worth of toys. "I am just a small-town country boy that started playing darts a long time ago and for me to be a part of this is unbelievable!" Kuczynski said.

One of Kuczynski's friends is Jennifer Weikel who said, "Every year this keeps growing and he has the biggest heart than anyone I ever met."

The bags of toys were then loaded on a large truck. Kuczynski said it was needed because of the sheer number of toys. "I love kids. I don't have any of my own but I have a four-year-old godson and he's going to help us load the toys up and is excited about it. He's four but understands there are kids that don't have anything," Kuczynski added.

Ed Quirin is a retired Marine and runs the Toys for Tots program in Schuylkill County . He said the need is great. "In 2008 we had about 800 kids, in 2009 we were about 1,200 and this year we're at 1,900 and still signing up and thats because of the economy," said Quirin.

Carmean Singley likes to volunteer her time. "It's too bad we can't see the smiles on those kids faces. It's great!" she said.

There is still time to donate to the Toys for Tots campaign.

Free Cell Phone Wallpaper: Dragon Darts

I was recently creating some custom wallpapers for my laptops, Blackberry, Pocket PC and other gizmos I have, when a friend noticed one of them I was using on the computer monitor the Man Cave. Having asked about it, I decided with a little effort I could share these wallpapers with my fellow dart players online as I create them.

The first in what will be an ongoing series of wallpapers for computers as well as cell phones, iPhones, Blackberrys and the rest is this Dragon Darts design. I have yet to transfer and upload the full sized monitor images for this particular design, I should be able to catch up on that next week.

My Fuel For Darts Next Week

They've given this killer blood pumping snack The Big Friggin' Burger. Because they're pretty friggin' creative at The Dirty Rooster where I run their weekly luck of the draw dart tournament. Although it only has 1lb of beef, it has the mandatory bacon, your choice of any or all the trimmins'... with grilled cheese sandwiches for the buns. And after seeing this posted on their Facebook page, I'm pretty sure I'll be havin' one Monday night.

Although The Dirty Rooster just celebrated their one year anniversary, the bar itself has been around for over a decade under a few different names, and a few different owners. One staple we've always enjoyed is the darts, and I'm glad to see darts continue there with the new owners.

If you're ever in the North Dallas area with your arrows be sure to drop by and chunk a few! And if you're there on a Monday night we start the dart tournament at 8:30PM. It's only a $5 entry fee and The Rooster matches the pot!

The World Series and Darts

Guess what happens when a dart shirt designer is out of beer, tossing a few darts on smoke breaks, working on designs and watching the World Series all at the same time...

Being a Rangers fan my entire life, I have to admit I'm excited to see the team under the watchful eye of Nolan Ryan and taking the franchise to this level. Yet being a dart player I'm left with a difficult decision on dart night if a game is on. Wear a dart shirt or a Texas Rangers shirt?

As you can see I've come up with a solution. With priority shipping I should be wearing this in time for next weeks blind draw dart tournament while watching the Rangers on the big screens!

Darts, a Bad Back and Bounce Outs

Although I've dealt with a back problem for years, recently I somehow managed to take back pain to a whole new level. In what friends and family are describing to me as a pinched nerve, when I bend over for anything pain shoots down my leg, lights up every damaged nerve from my previously broken (and still sketchy) ankle and my toes go numb. While playing darts at a friends last week I painfully took the laughing and kidding every time I made some likely hysterical physical move to pick up a dart that had bounced out. And I guess by Murphy's Law, I sure was getting a lot of bounce outs.

Having experienced that, I reflected on those in the game that are handicapped in some way. I know several shooters who live with back pain every day. Others who have permanent injuries. My recent solution hit me as I was packing up for my weekly blind draw dart tournament. My telescopic / magnetic pickup tool resides on the side of the beer fridge in the Man Cave. I threw it in the dart case and used it with much relief when I had a few bounce outs that night, and decided I'd buy another to keep in the dart case permanently.

I Diddled, But I Didn't Want To Go First

Last weekend me and a friend arrived at the Saturday afternoon blind draw to throw a few practice games. As I had one eye on the Texas Longhorns game and the other on grabbing my fresh, cold draft he walks up behind me and says "I Diddled" (for you foreigners: that's a term for throwing at the bull or "cork", closest dart gets to go first). I walked to the line and edged his dart out by a hair and he replied "But I Didn't Want To Go First". We had a good laugh and this dart shirt design was born.

Having been up late watching Rescue Me and throwing a few practice rounds, after the show I wound up on the Travel Channel checking out Man VS Food. I couldn't help but get a little entertained - and hungry - when they introduced a burger joint called Duffys Cherry Cricket.

Darts: The Hunt For The Mug

Last season a darts team contacted me with a design concept - Mug Hunters. They sent over a snap of the mug, which is the championship trophy for their league, The Raleigh Dart League in North Carolina.

The design winds up featuring the mug with a set of darts resting in it, the team name Mug Hunters in a camouflage pattern and a few bullets all from the point of view as if one were looking through a scope.

Congratulations are in order as they indeed won the coveted mug!

Alberto and his band of Hunters marched on to victory that season and are currently starting a new season to defend their title as league champs. Fellow Mughunter Trent sent in a request for a special dart shirt I think turns out to be a great addition to the teams look.

Mobile Apps for Darts: iPhone, Android, Blackberry

What would your darts app do?

Seems nowadays everything ends with the phrase "There's an app for that". Yet when I look around for a darts app, all I seem to find is Darts Scorer for iPhone, something called Pro Darts for the iPhone and a few others for keeping score or playing dart games on your mobile device.

Being a darts junkie, I really don't need help with keeping score and despite my love for the sport, I don't really care to whither hours away honing in my skills on my Blackberry when I could be standing in front of an actual dart board with my arrows.

Being a techno-junkie on the other hand inclines me to remedy the situation by developing a mobile app that makes sense for us crazy fans of darts.

Having said that, I am asking you - the darts community - what you'd like to have in a mobile app for darts. I intend on engineering the app to be available for iPhone, Android and Blackberry and I intend on offering it as a free download.

So far my ideas include:

A list of different dart games with their rules/how to play
Real time darts news from the major outlets
Player profiles and stats
Darts pub locator/directory
Major dart tournament schedules
Dart videos
The ability to share/post within social networks
Live streams from major events (if I can tackle that)

I'm wide open to your feedback and suggestions, and I'd like everyone to jump in. Bottom line is, I'd hate to put a lot of work into an app that me and maybe a dozen others may use. I'd like to create this for darts junkies that would be interested in having their darts fix available to them wherever they go.

New Darts Game - Sniper!

Well, it's new to me anyway...

Last night a few of us had arrived early for the weekly dart tournament, and a fellow shooter introduced us to an interesting game that focuses primarily on the doubles. You can include as many players as there are numbers on the board (21), and the double bull can be used. Here's how it is played:

Each player throws one dart with their off hand (ie: right handed players throw left handed). The number they hit becomes their assigned double. So if a player hits a single 19, the double 19 becomes their assigned double for opponents to shoot at. No two players can be assigned the same double, so if a player hits a number that is already taken they simply pull their dart and throw again until they hit an un-assigned number. Once all players have an assigned double, the throwing order is determined by closest to the bull to farthest from the bull.

The object of the game is to hit each opponents double three times to knock them out of the match. This is interesting because it is a collective effort by all players, three marks on any players double eliminates that player. In order to start each player must hit their assigned double to be activated (double in), then they may start marking the doubles they hit on their opponents assigned numbers.

If you hit your own double after being activated, it counts as a mark on your number. For example, last night I was assigned the double 14 and an opponent the double 11. That created a scenario to where either one of us could miss the intended double and slip into our own, thus shooting ourselves in the foot so to speak. It also provided our opponents a nice slice of the board to take us out early.

The way we were chalking it was simply listing the players in their throwing order with their assigned double next to their names. Once a player has hit their assigned double to get in, they can circle their number and begin aiming at all opponents assigned doubles. Three marks next to any player and they're out of the game, last player remaining gets the glory.

Yes dart players, it's that time of year again. And as an added bonus, if you're a racing fan this years Daytona 500 is scheduled for February 14th! I don't know about you but the romantic side of me says darts and race cars on Sunday!

OK, in reality several DVR's across the Country will likely be handling the race while Valentines Day takes it's course. But we're not going to forget our significant other, especially if we can get darts involved!
